How to Reprint Your Car Licence if You Throw It Away

Reading Time: 2 minutes

You read right. I applied for a new licence and it took a really long time to get to us. When it arrived, I opened the envelope to check it and put it down. A few days later, cleaning my apartment, I saw the open envelope (couldn’t see the licence so thought it was out) and threw it away. When I checked if the licence was on the car, it wasn’t, and so the panic ensued – but it was too late.

So what to do? What any modern human would do. Google Searched for “licence disc renewal online”. I reached out to 2 offices for a reprint and they asked for a major run around:

Then I tried the City of Cape Town website, which still has me registered as waiting for a response, but ultimately didn’t assist in printing the licence.

I then headed back to the NATIS Site (National Traffic Information System) and logged in (I had an existing account).

It said I wasn’t due for a renewal (which is correct because technically the car was renewed), so I left an enquiry about getting a reprint. They came back to me very quickly and didn’t require any extra paperwork. The reprint cost R149.

They then rang me to confirm I can collect from the Plumstead office in one week’s time. Super fast, super efficient. I was so impressed I wrote a blog post about it!

I hope this helps you in case you’ve thrown away or destroyed your licence for any reason, by accident. Happy driving!
