Cape Town’s Most Dependable Steakhouse: Hussar Grill in Moullie Point
Cape Town may be filled with culinary gems, but South Africa is known for its steak – and us locals consider it serious business. In reality, not all steaks are made equally – especially if you consume high quality produce as frequently as South Africans do; we’re discerning. This is why we’re stubborn about our favourite steak houses – we know a good steak from an average one (to be fair, there aren’t many bad ones when the food is this good!) – and this is on our favourites list.
Set against the scenic backdrop of the Atlantic ocean and Sea Point, with the nearby Green Point Lighthouse standing as a quiet sentinel, the Hussar Grill has earned a reputation as one of the city’s most cherished steak-house destinations.
What’s For Supper? (or lunch!)
At Hussar Grill, it’s all about the steak. The menu features a selection of expertly chosen cuts, each one designed to showcase the restaurant’s dedication to quality. This ranges from beef to a variety of game meat for those seeking to try the wild flavours of South Africa. This can include eiland, springbok, gemsbok and kudu – depending on availability. Each steak is seasoned with restraint, allowing the natural flavour of the meat to shine through.
The fillet steak is a safe choice, known for its buttery texture and delicate flavour, while the rump steak offers a slightly bolder flavour, but we’re team Sirloin. 200g or 300g with chips, an extra order of veg (butternut and spinach – what other veggies are their in the whole of South Africa?!) and onion rings on the side. Mushroom or Pepper sauce? Yes please.
Choose Better Food Over Better Views
The Hussar Grill is actually a chain of restaurants available across Cape Town. It’s our equivalent of Turn & Tender in Joburg. But not every branch is top tier. Some have great views, but don’t compare in food quality. Our favourite branches are in Moullie Point, Franschhoek and Rondebosch. They don’t have the best views, but they have the best food.
Great Value
Every meal at Hussar Grill begins with a welcoming touch: a complimentary bowl of fresh black olives and a serving of hand-cut chips (crisps). As for starters, the camembert is a personal favourite because the jam is warmed, retaining the gooey glory of the soft cheese. Both of these are small gestures, but it sets a welcoming tone for the rest of the evening.
Wine lovers will appreciate Hussar’s no-corkage policy, which allows you to bring along a bottle from home. That said, the restaurant’s wine list is beautifully curated, offering a diverse selection of South African wines that pair exquisitely with the meal. Ask the manager to guide you through the choices if you’re in the mood to try something new.
Seasonal Specials at the Hussar Grill
Lastly…
The ambiance at Hussar Grill strikes a balance between classic and relaxed, creating a setting that’s both reliable and unpretentious. The dress code is smart casual – if you’re just coming off the beach they’ll let you in, but it is a steak house so you may want to at least wear closed shoes (men).
Visit during the day to enjoy the bright blue skies and water of Moullie Point or visit at nighttime to catch up with old family and friends. The staff here are attentive without being intrusive, and they’re clearly proud of the menu they serve.
And if you have room for dessert, the Chocolate Fondant is always recommended, but being gluten-intolerant I tend to order a Frangelico Dom Pedro. If I’m heading out for the night though, I’ll skip and enjoy their complimentary chocolate shot that each guest received before leaving. Yum!
