One of the latest exhibitions I explored was at @h One of the latest exhibitions I explored was at @hazendal_estate. Having previously visited a selection of works centered around snowy Russia, it was a strong contrast to visit the Stellenbosch graduate exhibition named What The Body Keeps. Reminiscent of The Body Keep Score by Bessel van der Kolk, which explores the retention of trauma within the body (more specifically within the fascia, according to Dr Tara Swart), this show explores generational trauma and how stories are held in the body. These were my initial impressions on some pieces: ▫️The “blanket”, formally known as Umhambi I by Lisakhanya Ngqoba, reminded me of blankets made by Native American people who weave their history into their blankets so that their stories are, literally, physically handed down generation to generation. ▫️The “split head” (Material Witness) is made of wood, as is the fan (A Hold of Delicate Power), which doesn’t move, it’s a solid carving, both by @_robynnorval_ . The dress was also solid wood and not made with any fabric, perhaps a nod to the strength of women who hold a family together by hiding the family secrets year after year? ▫️ The “spider hand”, Growing a Ribcage by @jesse_martin_ really gave me the ick! Like a spider inside a lace glove, the movement and freakiness of this piece was amazing. Put it in a garden and let it live wild and free! The wood medium made it feel deeply organic. ▫️The “marshmallow pillow” is called Breathless Pressure Points by Katja Marsiglia. and made me think of The Passion of the Christ, almost like the crown of thorns was meant to be preserved in a pillow to soft to hold it. ▫️The “glass bottles” is called The Shape of What Remains by @lesa.rose . With alcohol induced violence so high in South Africa, I felt the very medium told a story before the actual visual aspect of each piece glued together. I also thought it was fitting that the farm bell was present just outside the gallery, I’m sure a feature of many personal stories, of the farm, over the years. Visit the exhibition while it’s still on display at #HazendalWineEstate.
