Family Fun on the Waterfront Duck!

A load of fun is waiting for you at the V&A, with the Waterfront Duck Company’s very own amphibious vehicle ready to glide you across the famous marina. As seagulls squawk before the noon gun fires, delight for the whole family awaits in the harbour side experience. Here’s our local guide to the Waterfront Duck:

How To Secure Tickets

The adventure begins by either buying your tickets on site or validating your online tickets at the duck kiosk. It’s a modernised container that also offers some drinks, snacks and merchandise, available before or after your trip. Once you have validated your ticket, the captain will announce the departure time and ALL ABOARD!

Guests enter the duck via a little ladder at the back of the vessel. Once aboard, the chief stew may request that some people switch sides – just to even out the weight of the duck. This ensures maximum safety.

Safety

Speaking of, all children under the age of 12 are required to wear a safety vest, this is supplied by the duck. Adults are also welcome to wear one should they like, there are sufficient lifejackets for all guests.

Once the boat is balanced out – kids are able to float – and the coast is clear, the duck will depart from the Silo District.

On this occasion, the traffic had been particularly busy. The conductor then suggested we shortened the road portion of the route and enter the water a little closer. I personally preferred this to sitting in traffic, because we all know it’s a truck – but can it be a boat?!

And off we went!

I was anticipating a giant splash, just like our entry point in Liverpool, but this captain is far more demure as we gently rolled into basin – a far softer approach.

From the moment we entered the water, we felt tickled as the duck glided across the marina. Surrounded by nature, living harmoniously with the man made quay, it was a delight.

The conductor shared so many interesting facts and stories about the Cape and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, offering not only a fun excursion, but a genuinely interesting tour for all ages to enjoy.

The tour last approximately one hour – so it’s not too long for kids to keep still in one place.
