How to Buy Cheap Moulin Rouge Tickets
The Moulin Rouge is home to the world-renowned can-can dance and has been a beacon of Parisian nightlife for over a century. Like many others, I had always dreamed of visiting this iconic venue but never seriously considered the logistics or cost. However, on our honeymoon, my husband Al-John and I finally made it — and with discounted tickets! Here’s how we did it and what you should know before you go.
7 Things To Know About the Moulin Rouge

Staying in Pigalle: The Red-Light Surprise
For our honeymoon, we stayed in Pigalle, a suburb my brother recommended after his time touring with Johnny Clegg in nearby Abbesses. The area’s metro stop connects two major lines (2 and 6), making it a practical base for exploring Paris. However, we soon discovered Pigalle’s colorful reputation as Paris’ red-light district!
Our first evening stroll revealed quite the neighborhood: next door to the world’s largest sex shop, the Sexodrome, and just a short walk from the iconic Moulin Rouge. It was a fascinating blend of charm and risqué entertainment.
How We Found Affordable Moulin Rouge Tickets
Seeing the real Moulin Rouge was a bucket-list moment for me, especially after years of passing its “imitation” in Cape Town’s Riebeek Street. However, the ticket prices were steep—up to €280 per person (that’s R5000pp)! As South African travelers, this felt excessive for a spontaneous outing. We almost gave up until Al-John suggested looking for a matinee or late-night option. Genius!
To our delight, we discovered an 11 pm show priced at just €100 per person. Though we were underdressed, we jumped at the chance, queued up, and immersed ourselves in the magic of the Moulin Rouge. (As of 2024, similar deals are still available, with tickets priced at €100 on Wednesdays and €105 on Tuesdays.)
Bal du Moulin Rouge (Dance of the Moulin Rouge)
The long queues moved quickly, and stepping into the foyer was surreal. The rich red decor, iconic lamps, and golden accents instantly transported us to another era. Despite being in the ‘cheap seats,’ we had front-row views at communal tables, which added to the intimate experience. Each couple received a small bottle of champagne to share, making the evening feel extra special.
The show itself was a dazzling spectacle. From trapeze acts to acrobatics, and even a dancer swimming with a giant python – it was a mix of awe-inspiring performances. The roller-skating duo spinning on a tiny stage left me breathless with nerves and admiration! The can-can dancers’ glamorous costumes and vibrant choreography brought the historic dance to life and it was incredible to be viewing the can-can in real time in real life.
Show Surprises
A few surprises included the mix of appropriately and casually dressed guests (chancers like ourselves mixed with guests who had clearly prepared for the evening), the occasional confusion about photography rules (pictures while the house lights were on seemed ok, but no photography during the show), and the seating arrangement (couples sat opposite each other). Despite this, the experience felt luxurious, and even the French champagne added to the charm — regardless of its quality!
One thing to note: while the performers were stunning, the dancers’ vocals were pre-recorded, which was slightly disappointing. Some moments felt live, though I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve been. Interestingly, not all dancers were topless — only the ‘stars’ of the show—and it was done tastefully, maintaining the elegance the Moulin Rouge is known for.
Is It Worth Visiting?
Visiting the Moulin Rouge was an unforgettable experience and a highlight of our Paris trip. This historic theater, rebuilt after a fire in the 20th century, offers a glimpse into Paris’ vibrant cultural history. While I can’t vouch for the dinner (we chose to eat elsewhere), I highly recommend enjoying one of Paris’ incredible restaurants beforehand and savoring the show with champagne.
The Moulin Rouge is more than just a performance; it’s an iconic piece of Parisian heritage. If you get the chance, dress up, soak in the ambiance, and make the most of this magical venue.
Post dedicated to Kate & Duncan, Mike & Jo who allowed us to go to the Moulin Rouge 🙂 Thank you!
