The Peech Hotel: Leafy Haven in the Heart of Joburg

CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF THE PEECH HOTEL – OCT 2026

The Peech Hotel will celebrate its 22nd anniversary with a special lunch and dinner collaboration at The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg (based at the hotel) from Thursday 26th – Saturday 28th November 2026. Ebie, Head Chef of The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg, and Nathan, Head Chef of The Test Kitchen Fledgelings in Cape Town, will reunite to create a six-course menu inspired by their backgrounds and shared beginnings at the original Test Kitchen. Having worked their way from scullers to accomplished head chefs, the pair return to cook together with their mentor, Luke Dale Roberts, cheering them on.

More About Our Stay at the Peech Hotel

My colleagues in Johannesburg are in their element as the sound of large droplets start to fall during our Teams’ call. The morning’s beautiful, deep blue skies with huge, white billowing clouds disappear under the dark, moody cover of Africa’s economic centre; ready for afternoon duties.

Determined drops start to attack the paved pathways while purple lightning flashes across the sky – a spectacular show – even from our downstairs room at the Peech Hotel. The hallmark of the bush – and the sound of home for my colleagues.

For me, it’s the slow rolling tap… click… crack… and BOOM that sees me leap, with my laptop in hand, from desk to bed. “Something’s definitely been hit! That was TOO loud!” So loud, in fact, it even elicited a response from Al-John, ever the extrovert – confirmed by the internet going down for a moment.

More commonly associated with mine dumps and camelthorn trees, Johannesburg’s weather is the opposite of Cape Town’s windy, sunny January. As lush thundershowers nurture gardens into deep emerald oases, with fluttering butterflies, vibrant lawns and darting lizards at the Peech Hotel.

A Weekend in Melrose

Surprisingly, few of my Joburg friends had even heard of The Peech Hotel. A miss on their part. It’s the only hotel in the city with Fair Trade Tourism accreditation, and one of just three in the entire country. 2026 saw The Peech included, once again, in the 2026 Selection of the MICHELIN Guide, which recognizes the quality of the experience offered to guests as well as the daily dedication of the entire staff.

Visiting in early January though, meant Joburg was still in hibernation mode, with many restaurants closed for the low season as families exit the city to enjoy the summer holidays.

Designed with Substance and Sustainability

The Peech Hotel started as a residential home before suites and rooms were added onto the property. Today, the reception and shared facilities are housed, including the new Garden Bar. Two pools remain on the property to ensure maximum relaxation time for all water babies.

Before shutting the laptop for the week, we had a look at several refurbished rooms. Completed in 2023, the design is quintessentially South African – materials chosen with permanence in mind, and interiors created in partnership with local artisans.

Engineered oak flooring, quartz-finished bathrooms, solid timber headboards and open wardrobes give each space a grounding sense of calm and longevity. Soft textiles and colour palettes echo the surrounding gardens, while the decorative hangings printed on rPET (recycled plastic) add another layer of sustainability without sacrificing aesthetic.

We particularly loved the unexpected touches: the metal desk and cabinet combination, beautifully textured lamps, and the playful local artwork in the bathrooms.

Sustainability isn’t a marketing line here – it’s built into the bones of the Peech property. From durable, considered furnishings to their support of local NGOs including Little Eden, Immaculata and Bethany House, The Peech extends its impact beyond its gates.

Breakfast – and a Mynah Confession

Breakfast is served under a canopy of trees, with space as relaxed as the morning menu. I exposed myself as a tourist immediately by commenting on the “cute little bird hopping around our table”, which was met with a raised eyebrow and a gentle explanation that the common mynah is… less charming to locals as they’re an invasive species. Oops!

We were due out at a wedding in the early afternoon so we retreated to our suite to get ready for the afternoon’s celebrations. A graceful exit.

Our suite offered both a great shower and a generously sized bath – and if a hotel offers a bath, I will always make note. A copy of Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime sat beside the bed, reinforcing The Peech’s commitment to supporting local talent – not just in décor but in storytelling.

Exiting and returning was effortless with security on site 24/7. All Ubers are checked before entering the property, which made us feel safe without feeling surveilled. With Johannesburg’s reputation for crime, we felt completely safe at the Peech Hotel and would revisit for this surety.

Lasting Impression

The Peech Hotel was the perfect base for our Johannesburg weekend: central, secure and surprisingly peaceful. It let us feel like we were on holiday while still having easy access to the wedding, bars and local eateries. Staff were warm and efficient – they even steamed our wedding outfits within a couple of hours after I forgot to request it earlier.
