The 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa is one of the few hotels in Cape Town that is truly cradled by the glory of nature. Framed against a dozen outcrops, the hotel derives its name from Table Mountain’s western peeks proudly separating the sky and sea. Clouds pour over the cliff edge as sunbirds visit various pink and red Cape proteas. On a bright, sunny day the hotel shines like a gem in a crown of natural flora and fauna, creating the most immersive platform to whale watch in Cape Town.
Positioned between the well-known suburb of Camps Bay and Houtbay, the five star hotel is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection and is a stand alone hotel inside the Table Mountain National Park. As turquoise waves crash over smooth, brown boulders, black seals bask in the sunlight and soft, salty air clears your sinuses; arriving at the hotel always starts on a calming note.
Parking in the covered parking, we arrive to the well-known turning door before stepping into the small, carpeted lobby. The mirrored ceiling is always a fun distraction, while the reception houses one of my favourite paintings of Cape Town – a stellar orange sunset over the ocean outside the hotel.
A Garden and Ocean Suite
We had the privilege of staying a room right at the end of the hotel (something my introverted husband adored – the less neighbour engagement, the better), which allowed for easy garden access. With the weather growing gloomy, the soft yellow tiles warm up the suite. The shuttered blinds and sliding doors also created an “inside-outside” feel, keeping us cosy while drawing natural light into the room.
With a comfortable king-size bed (ensuring two large adults have a proper night’s rest), there is also a lounge suite that provides a welcome separation for those wanting to snuggle and those wanting to sneak in a bit of work. The split level room allows each portion to have a sense of separateness while still being together.
Although damp, we decided step into the garden from our room; discovering bow-shaped green poles, which we couldn’t quite place. Turning to take in the ocean, we realise they are hammock poles. What a delight it would be to sway away the afternoon with a good book and sparkling Atlantic in front of you.
Twelve Apostles Experiences
Visiting during the low season, the hotel was fairly quiet, allowing us to mooch around with considerable independence. We enjoyed:
- Wedding Venue: We explored the back lawns with the wedding arbor against the incredible backdrop.
- Leopard Bar: If you happen to catch one of Cape Town’s iconic sunsets, this will be unforgettable. They are also known for their high tea‘s, including a vegan edition.
- Dinner at Azure: Watching the light fade over the Atlantic is a great way to enjoy local seafood, venison (be sure to ask which type – we have many antelopes in South Africa) and a sweet dessert.
- Private Cinema: While we did not visit the cinema on this occasion, we have in the past and it’s a great way to watch a classic movie with complimentary snacks.
- The Spa: The spa has a special treatment rooms located outside on the hillside, certainly unforgettable views while you relax.
- Pool: Available to guests only, this ensure you enjoy privacy at the beautiful hotel away from summer crowds.
In the evenings, the restaurants run quietly as guests enjoy their intimate dinners together. The sound of the ocean across the road, along with medium-low light and fresh South African ingredients ensure guests go to bed feeling both satisfied and satiated.
Breakfasts at Azure
The breakfast spread is one of the most mindful I’ve seen since the pandemic. Most portions are presented in individual portions or glass jars, ensuring the hygiene and safety of patrons. We have a small bowl of fruit followed by eggs Benedict, an oldie but a goodie! A glass of bubbly is available, but being a week day I sadly had to decline.
Final Notes
The Twelve Apostle Hotel and Spa is a very special location in Cape Town and would suit those who are looking for a more relaxed visit to the Mother City; than one that excludes hustling and bustling. This is because the hotel is not “on the way” to any night life spots, meaning guests are required to travel into Camps Bay (as the nearest nightlife and entertainment location) by a 10 minute car ride. It would not be possible to walk back to the hotel as the road is not paved to facilitate walkers safely.
